A day in the Life
Mr Russell
A day in the life of our caretaker Mr.Russell
By Matthew Walker, Ms.Griffin’s 5th class
At 8.00am he turns on the heating so it warms up the school for when the children come in. He goes into the boiler room in each school and turns it on.
Between 8.00 and 9.00am he does all the bins outside and inside the classrooms. If the bins are being collected that day he will bring them and leave them outside the school gate.
Between 9.00 and 9.30am he does all the classroom checks such as tissue paper, toilet roll, sanitiser ect. If anything is needed he will go to one of the store rooms located around the school.
Between 9.30 and 10.00am he checks the school to make sure everything is safe, for eg, sweep up wet leaves and salts the paths. He also salts the teachers car park. Outside the school gate there is a box of grit salt that he uses.
Between 10.00am and 12.00pm he does all the teachers requests for eg, basketball hoops, pictures hung up ect. There are some jobs he can not do during school hours. If he was doing something noisy inside the building it will distract the children who are working.
Additional Jobs
Sometimes he cuts the grass but he has to do it on free afternoon because it can take up to 6 hours to do the whole school.
On 10th of October he called a man from Irish water to fix a water leak at the back of the Rainbow School. They managed to find it and fix it successfully.
Mr. Russel also built a ramp outside the white school incase teachers need to bring the ipads in or a wheelchair needs to enter the school
Christmas
On the weeks leading up to Christmas Mr. Russel was making the stage for the junior infants and fourth class Christmas play. After Christmas he had to take it down.
He also had to set up the voting stations in the P.E hall for when the elections were happening.
